Dance-pop is
dance-oriented pop music that initiated in the early 1980s. Budding from
post-disco and synthpop, it is usually up-tempo music planned for clubs with
the aim of being danceable but also apt for contemporary hit radio. Dance-pop
music is usually characterized by strong beats with simple, easy song
structures which are usually more similar to pop music than the more free-form
dance genre, with an importance on melody as well as catchy tunes. The genre,
on the whole, tends to be producer-driven, despite some prominent
omissions.
Dance-pop is a
well-liked style and there are numerous artists and groups who perform in the
genre. Notable ones comprise Corina, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Jennifer
Lopez, Madonna, Sheena Easton, Kylie Minogue, Rihanna, Backstreet Boys, Michael
Jackson, and among others.
